Beyond the Needle: Your most important questions about Blade & Shade tattoos

The desire for self-expression and embracing individuality leads many to adorn their skin with unique artworks. But before taking this step, there are undoubtedly a variety of questions running through your mind.

In this article, we'll shed light on the essential FAQs surrounding the topic of tattoos at Blade & Shade – from costs to proper care.

How much does a tattoo cost?

Answering this isn't straightforward; it depends on factors like size, placement, style, and the individual's skin. Our starting price for a tattoo is 220 CHF.

Is tattooing painful?

Typically, a tattoo is felt as uncomfortable during the process, with varying levels of pain at different times and locations.

Which styles do you tattoo?

We offer almost all common tattoo styles to, from Fineline and lettering tattoos, about Neotraditional, Graphic & Geometric, Polynesian Tattoos to Realistic Tattoos. Our specialties lie in the areas of Fineline, Graphic, Realistic, and Cover Up Tattoos.

How do I prepare for my tattoo?

For us to approach your tattoo correctly, we need a rough idea from you. Knowing where and how large you want your tattoo, along with potential inspiration in the form of a picture, makes it easier for us. You can easily bring or print images on your smartphone. Before your appointment, prepare your skin by moisturizing it daily with body lotion or cream to aid in healing.

How large should my tattoo be?

The size of the tattoo should always be in proportion to the placement. So if you want a small tattoo, we recommend that you place it in a place where it doesn't look lost and should also be large enough that it is of good quality even when healed and aged. If you want a large tattoo, it is important that the motif flows with the body and its shapes and has enough space. In general, the bigger the motif gets, the better the tattoo will last.

What should I consider with a tattoo?

A tattoo is a decision that accompanies you for life. You should therefore be absolutely sure what you are tattooing yourself.

When should I touch up a tattoo?

In principle, a tattoo does not have to be re-stitched if the healing was successful. Today's color pigments are also significantly more stable than they were just a few years ago. This means that the aging of tattoos is slower today. However, it is very important that the skin is regularly cared for and protected from excessive sunlight so that a tattoo remains beautiful in the long term.

How do I take care of my tattoo?

We sell our own aftercare ointment which can be purchased in the shop. You will receive the cream free of charge at your appointment. In principle, we recommend that you work with it; alternatively, Bepanthen can be used.

Which tattoo inks are banned from 2022?

While numerous pigments and preservatives are banned in the EU from 2022, Switzerland is unaffected for now. However, we've been using colors that will remain permissible, aligning with potential future regulations.

What tattoo suits me?

The ideal tattoo depends heavily on your personal preferences, interests and possibly even your life story. Here are a few considerations that might help you decide:

  • Meaning: Choose symbols or motifs that have special meaning for you or represent an important life experience.
  • Personal style: Look at your personal style and taste. Do you prefer abstract art, traditional designs, or realistic representations?
  • Life stage: Take into account your current phase of life. What's important now could change over time. Think about the relevance of your tattoo over the long term.
  • Body area: Think about which part of the body you want the tattoo on and how visible it should be. Some places are better suited to specific subjects.
  • Advice: Talk to a professional tattoo artist. They can help you choose and adapt a design that suits you and is technically easy to implement.

Remember that getting a tattoo is a personal choice and it's important to choose something that's meaningful to you personally.

When to remove tattoo bandages?

The film protects your fresh tattoo from external influences such as dirt, bacteria and friction. The exact time you should remove the tattoo bandage depends on your tattoo artist's instructions. It is usually recommended to remove the bandage after approximately 24-48 hours. The situation is different if you have wound care without a self-adhesive tattoo bandage. Your tattoo artist will give you specific instructions, so it's important to follow them.

Which tattoo location is most painful?

Pain sensitivity varies from person to person and everyone has different pain limits. However, some parts of the body are generally considered to be more painful when tattooing. This includes:

  • Ribs: The skin over the ribs is thin and sensitive.
  • Elbows: The elbows have less fat deposits, which can increase pain.
  • Ankles and back of the foot: Here, the skin is thin and the bones are close to the surface.
  • Wrists: The skin is thin and there are fewer muscles that can be used as cushions.

If you're worried about the pain, talk to your tattoo artist, who may be able to provide tips or advice. There are now good techniques for tattooing with as little pain as possible and making the tattoo process as pleasant as possible.

How to protect tattoo from the sun?

To protect a fresh tattoo from the sun and preserve the colors and skin health, you should take the following measures:

  • Observe the healing phase: Make sure that the tattoo is completely healed before you expose it to sunlight. The healing time may vary depending on the size and location of the tattoo, but it usually takes several weeks.
  • Use sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF (50+) to the tattoo. Use a fragrance-free and fragrance-free cream to prevent skin irritation.
  • Cover: Cover the tattoo with light clothing to prevent direct sunlight. Loose clothing made from breathable fabrics is particularly recommended.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: Try to minimize direct sunlight on the tattoo. Look for shade or cover it with a bandage if you're outside for a long time.

These measures not only help to maintain the color intensity of the tattoo, but also protect sensitive skin from harmful UV rays during the healing process.
