Beyond the Needle: Your Most Important Questions About Blade & Shade Tattoos

The desire for self-expression and living out your individuality drives many people to adorn their skin with unique works of art. But before you take that step, you likely have a myriad of questions running through your mind.

In this article, we’ll address the most important FAQs regarding tattoos at Blade & Shade – from pricing to proper aftercare.

How Much Does a Tattoo Cost?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer – the cost depends on the complexity of the design. Factors include the size, placement, tattoo style, and even the client’s skin. Our base price for a tattoo is 220 CHF.

Is Getting Tattooed Painful?

The tattoo process is generally perceived as uncomfortable, with varying degrees of pain depending on the duration and the specific area being tattooed.

What Tattoo Styles Do You Offer?

We offer almost all common tattoo styles to, from Fineline and lettering tattoos, about Neotraditional, Graphic & Geometric, Polynesian Tattoos to Realistic Tattoos. Our specialties lie in the areas of Fineline, Graphic, Realistic, and Cover Up Tattoos.

How Do I Prepare for My Tattoo?

To get started, we need a rough idea from you. Let us know where and approximately how big you’d like your tattoo, and if possible, bring along an inspiration image. You can easily bring images on your smartphone or print them out. Before your appointment, you can also prepare your skin by applying body lotion or moisturizer daily. This helps your skin better cope with the tattoo process and its healing.

How Big Should My Tattoo Be?

The size should always be appropriate for the chosen placement. For a small tattoo, we recommend placing it where it won’t look lost and ensuring it’s large enough to maintain good quality even after healing and aging. If you’re opting for a larger tattoo, the design should flow with your body’s contours and have ample space. Generally, the larger the design, the better the tattoo will age.

What Should I Consider Before Getting a Tattoo?

A tattoo is a lifelong decision, so you need to be completely sure about what you’re getting inked.

When Should I Get a Tattoo Touch-Up?

Typically, a tattoo does not need to be touched up if it heals well. Modern pigments are significantly more stable than they used to be, meaning tattoos age more slowly today. However, it’s very important to care for your skin regularly and protect it from excessive sun exposure to keep your tattoo looking great over time.

How Do I Care for My Tattoo?

We sell our own aftercare ointment in our shop – you even receive the cream free of charge with a daytime appointment. We generally recommend using this product, but a Bepanthen ointment is also a good alternative.

Which Tattoo Inks Are Banned as of 2022?

Since 2022, numerous pigments and preservatives have been banned in the EU. While this doesn’t yet affect Switzerland, we have been using inks that will remain compliant even if these regulations are adopted here.

Which Tattoo Suits Me?

The ideal tattoo is highly personal and depends on your tastes, interests, and perhaps even your life story. Consider the following:

  • Meaning: Choose symbols or motifs that hold special significance or represent a major life experience.
  • Personal Style: Reflect on your personal style and taste. Do you prefer abstract art, traditional designs, or realistic depictions?
  • Life Stage: Consider your current phase of life. What matters to you now might change over time, so think long-term about the relevance of your tattoo.
  • Placement: Decide where on your body you want the tattoo and how visible you want it to be. Some areas are better suited to certain designs.
  • Consultation: Talk to a professional tattoo artist who can help you choose and refine a design that suits you and is technically feasible.

Remember, a tattoo is a personal decision – it’s important to choose something that is meaningful to you.

When Should I Remove the Tattoo Bandage?

The film protects your fresh tattoo from external influences such as dirt, bacteria and friction. The exact time you should remove the tattoo bandage depends on your tattoo artist's instructions. It is usually recommended to remove the bandage after approximately 24-48 hours. The situation is different if you have wound care without a self-adhesive tattoo bandage. Your tattoo artist will give you specific instructions, so it's important to follow them.

Which Tattoo Location Hurts the Most?

Pain sensitivity varies from person to person, and everyone’s pain threshold is different. However, some areas are generally considered more painful for tattooing, such as:

  • Ribs: The skin over the ribs is thin and sensitive.
  • Elbows: With less fat padding, the pain can be more pronounced.
  • Ankles and the Top of the Foot: Here, the skin is thin, and bones are close to the surface.
  • Wrists: Thin skin and less muscle for cushioning can contribute to increased pain.

If you’re worried about the pain, talk to your tattoo artist – they can offer tips or advice. Nowadays, there are effective techniques to minimize pain and make the tattooing process as comfortable as possible.

How Do I Protect My Tattoo from the Sun?

To protect a fresh tattoo from the sun and preserve both the colors and skin health, follow these steps:

  • Observe the Healing Phase: Ensure your tattoo is fully healed before exposing it to sunlight. Healing times vary depending on the tattoo’s size and location, but it generally takes several weeks.
  • Use Sunscreen: Apply a high-SPF sunscreen (50+) to your tattoo. Choose a fragrance-free, unscented cream to avoid irritation.
  • Cover Up: Cover the tattoo with light clothing to shield it from direct sunlight. Breathable, loose clothing is particularly recommended.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Minimize direct exposure by seeking shade or covering the tattoo with a bandage if you’ll be outdoors for an extended period.

These measures not only help maintain the tattoo’s color intensity but also protect the delicate skin during the healing process from harmful UV rays.
